Early in Fallout 4, players encounter "When Freedom Calls," a pivotal main quest that introduces core gameplay mechanics such as Power Armor, heavy weaponry, and settlement building. Taking place in the historic town of Concord, this mission tasks the Sole Survivor with rescuing Preston Garvey and his small group of survivors from a raider siege inside the Museum of Freedom. Successfully completing this quest sets the foundation for your journey across the Commonwealth and establishes your alliance with the Minutemen.
Reaching Concord and Clearing the Museum Exterior
Your journey begins shortly after leaving Sanctuary and visiting Red Rocket Truck Stop, where you meet your canine companion, Dogmeat. Following the main road leads directly into Concord, where gunshots and shouting signal an ongoing firefight near the Museum of Freedom. Players staying updated on RPG strategies and daily gaming news often emphasize taking a cautious approach here, taking cover behind abandoned vehicles while picking off raiders stationed along the street.
Once the exterior forces are eliminated, approach the front entrance of the museum to pick up a laser musket lying near a fallen settler. This weapon provides substantial single-shot damage when fully cranked, making it ideal for the close-quarters engagements awaiting inside. Enter the building to initiate the next phase of the rescue mission.
Navigating the Interior and Meeting Preston Garvey
Inside the Museum of Freedom, clear out the remaining raiders room by room as you make your way to the top floor. Keep an eye out for supplies, ammo containers, and lockpick opportunities that yield extra resources for early-game progression. Reaching the upper room allows you to speak directly with Preston Garvey, who explains their desperate situation and outlines a plan to turn the tide.
To turn the power back on and access the suit of T-45 Power Armor on the roof, you will need a Fusion Core. Head down to the basement area, where a locked security gate houses a fusion generator. Use your Pip-Boy interface to pick the novice-level lock, retrieve the core, and return upstairs to power up the armor.
Equipping Power Armor and Securing the Minigun
With the Fusion Core secured, head through the exit door leading onto the museum roof. Insert the core into the abandoned Power Armor frame to fully initialize the suit's systems. Step inside the armor to gain enhanced defense, increased carrying capacity, and immunity to fall damage.
Before dropping down to the street level, rip the rotary minigun from the crashed Vertibird on the rooftop. This heavy weapon packs immense firepower and comes with a substantial supply of 5mm ammunition. Position yourself on the roof edge to survey the street below before leaping down to clear out incoming reinforcements.
Defeating the Raider Horde and the Concord Deathclaw
Dropping into Concord triggers a massive secondary wave of raiders pushing down the main boulevard. Use the minigun to quickly suppress enemy units taking cover inside doorway entrances and behind street barriers. However, save a healthy portion of your ammunition, as a fearsome Deathclaw will burst from the sewer grate at the far end of town.
When combating the Deathclaw, maintain a safe distance and utilize nearby buildings for cover, as the creature cannot easily fit inside narrow doorways. Focus your fire on its belly area, which serves as its primary weak spot, while letting Dogmeat distract it from behind. Once the beast and remaining hostiles are defeated, return to Preston Garvey to complete the quest and escort the survivors back to Sanctuary.
